George Gaut was born in 1883 in Barnham (Thetford Q3-1883 4B:378), son of Charles and Caroline GAUT (née STEGGLES ?).
His surname is variously GAUT, GAUTE, GANTE or GANT.
1891 census...Aged 7, he was at Tower Street, Barnham with his father Charles Gaut [31] platelayer's labourer born Barnham; his mother Caroline [29] born Hopton; brother John [9] and sister Alice [1]. All the children were born in Barnham. 1901 census...Aged 25 at 24 Albert Road, Egham, Surrey boarding with the YARDLEY family. His parents were in Barnham with his sisters Alice, Ada [6] and Ellen [1] and brother Harry [3] were still in Barnham. He married Mary AXTELL (b. 23-9-1895 (Eton Q3-1906 3A:1717) 1911 census...Aged 27 a butcher (manager), he was at 74 Gladstone Street, Swindon with his wife Mary [25] born Slough; daughter Vera Lottie [4] (b.3-1-1907 born Slough and son Sidney William [2] born Swindon.(b.24-2-1909).
The pension card has Mary and the children at 8 Chapel Street, Slough.

He enlisted in Cambridge.
During the struggle to halt the German Spring Offensive some bitter and not always successful fighting took place with heavy casualties on both side. By the night of the 17-18 April the 11th Suffolks had withdrawn behind the River Lys and were relieved, first into Reserve, then three days later to billets back at Boeschepe. The war diary appears to be missing, but CWGC give the deaths on 19th April as 28, all bar six being buried in Suffolk Cemetery
